Rearranging Film - Transfer, Gains and Losses in the Digitization Process

What are we actually digitizing?

Is “film” a strip of plastic with holes on the sides and images on it? Is it what we hear and see in the cinema?
In the course, we discuss which properties of film can actually be digitized, how the processes and workflows of digitization function, and which steps may be necessary for the digital screening and archiving of a film.
We examine various possibilities of film digitization, from homemade solutions to industrial ones, and investigate the problems of long-term media archiving.

Film editing tables are indispensable tools for viewing and editing films. There are four analog editing tables in the film studies department at Goethe University, none of which are functional.

We are making a virtue out of necessity, using the opportunity to learn about and understand the mysterious inner workings of the editing tables, and attempting to get them running again.
